3DS game recs?
Updated my layout:
nanslice. Woo!
So I'm looking to buy a new 3DS game. Right now all I have is Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Pokemon X. I quite like casual games, RPGs, and romance (straight is good but gay is betttterr). I also like sandbox games but I'm not sure those are things that are really big on the 3DS? :\a I know Fantasy Life is a thing.
Right now I'm eyeballing LoZ: A Link Between Worlds and Mario Kart 7. I downloaded a few demos to see how things go. I tried out Legend of Legacy and it's a lot of fun! I love exploration in gaming. ;3;
ANYWAY, if anyone has any 3DS game recs, let me hear them! I have the new 3ds, if that makes a difference; the only game I know of that requires that is Xenoblade Chronicles. :\a
I have to go to my Geo lab tonight and bluuuuh, I don't want to. ;;;;

gosh this got long
It's a very JRPG-flavored JRPG. There's a canon straight romance, but you control the affinity between the characters and can read in to several other relationships aside from that one (I sure did). The Heart To Heart moments - tiny little subplot events that you get through exploration and getting people's affinity to the right place - were a major thing that kept me going, and I quite liked the story. Even though there was some grinding, I never felt like I was /grinding,/ you know? Also, the outfits were routinely beautiful and very cosplay-able. I have a list. >.>
Also Zelda: Majora's Mask is amazing no matter what platform it's on. It's a Zelda game, so you probably already know the mechanics and the general gist of the plot, but it's a Zelda game with strong horror elements. \o/
Monster Hunter is a grindy grindy grinding game. You hunt monsters. That's the whole plot. The characterization is what you bring to it. It's also gorgeous and I found the mechanics to be totally addictive, and I am NOT a person who likes to grind, or play games that are pure crunch - which MH indisputably is. This game is way out of my comfort zone. I'm getting Monster Hunter X when it comes out here, because monsters.
I'd recommend against Bravely Default, alas. The music is good, but I haaated several characters, the writing routinely made me put the game down by stepping on some of my least favorite tropes (women in makeup: LITERALLY DESTROYING THE WORLD*) and the grinding got so old that I basically automated my combat style and was trying to read a book and mash A simultaneously, before deciding it was a waste of good electrons and putting it down forever.

-Fantasy Life. So repetitive and not rewarding imo. I wasted a lot of time on it and wish I hadn't. Wish I'd waited and gotten Story of Seasons instead.
Some RPGs I still haven't freaking beaten:
+Fire Emblem: Awakening: I like the combat a bunch. The shipping is sometimes fun. Found the story boring. Recommend this one for an RPG with fun shipping and if you like tactical combat.
+Bravely Default: Didn't like this one as much but it's still ok. Recommend if you like Final Fantasy type RPGs.
+Etrian Odyssey Series: have played Untold: The Millennium Girl (remake of the 1st game), and IV so far. REALLY like the dungeon exploration/map-drawing a lot. Beat the story mode of The Millennium Girl but haven't finished beating all the dungeons. Didn't get far in IV yet. Recommend if you like map exploration and cartography.

I love picross games generally. And Final Fantasy Theatrhythm, if you like FF music. It's cute and charming and fun.

Both Link Between Worlds and Mario Kart 7 are noth super fun, but personally I like LBW better. At this point I think I can say it my favorite Zelda game. Ever.
If you have the new 3DS, you owe it to yourself to play Xenoblade Chronicles. It is one of my favorite games of all time, I loved it and beat it both on the Wii and the 3DS. It's a better experience on the Wii, but it's also rare and expensive on the Wii. :/ The portability factor makes it easier to play, though, and it's a nice game to snuggle up in bed and engross yourself in. It's huge though, and really long (depending on how many quests you do it can become unruly. Personally I did it in about 80 hours on my 3DS run, but I know people who have put, like, 150 into it). Exploring the world is fun and the story is really exciting. The world stands out more than the characters do, but that is okay because the world is AMAZING.
I don't have much experience with Awakening, but I spent a good chunk of 2015 doing all three storylines of Fire Emblem if/Fates (which comes out in English next month). It was amazing. Loved the battles and character building.
Bravely Default is fun too. Fantastic music and addicting job system. The story and characters are standard fare, but I loved it.
I...wouldn't recommend Legend of Legacy unless you are really serious about it. The music and atmosphere are top notch, but it is punishingly difficult. The whole game is a grind, and there isn't much of a story to motivate you to pull through. In the right mood it is probably awesome, but if you want to play casually or for story, it probably won't be a good match. Seems like it is a game made for people who grew up with, cut their teeth on and feel nostalgic for the NES era of super tough, grindy RPGs.
As someone else mentioned, I'd recommend the Theatrythm games too. Or really, all you need is Curtain Call, as it is a much bigger game than the first.
RPG related, too, be on the lookout for the 3DS Dragon Quest games. They won't be out in English until summer I think, but they are charming, classic experiences.
Are you a Persona/Atlus fan? I can't remember. If so, Atlus has a TON of games on 3DS, and they all have reviewed pretty well. I haven't put much time into any except Persona Q (which I loved, but though dragged on way too long).
Non RPG related, if you like nintendo platformers Mario in 3D Land and the Kirby game super fun too! I'm sure there are others too, but this comment is long enough so I'm going to stop myself here. I hope you find something good to play!

-picross, esp the pokemon version, which is free even if it's Very Obviously Play To Win
-Story of Seasons, which is what Harvest Moon has become (we don't talk about the newest Harvest Moon game)
-..if you do want a brand name Harvest Moon game, tho, A New Beginning is pretty solid.
-Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, all the best parts of the new series combined w what I considered the Best Pokemon Game Ever
-Fire Emblem Awakening, esp if you like strategy games & serious character building. plus, the new Fire Emblem coming out next month has some gay characters
-Fantasy Life, which is super awesome but also super cutesy & because of that can get a little annoying after a few hours? maybe that's just me
-Phoenix Wright. the updated trilogy is on the marketplace as a download & is SO worth it. Dual Destinies isn't QUITE as good but is fun. haven't played PW vs Professor Layton yet but I do have it downloaded & it looks just as awesome.
-Shovel Knight, but it's a little hardcore side-scrolly
-Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer is SUPER FUN, very relaxing & casual. it's literally just an Animal Crossing sim where you decorate other people's houses. you have the New 3DS so you don't need the reader for the cards; it's built right in.
-Project X Zone was fun & hilarious, it uses a whole bunch of characters from a bunch of different Japanese pop things (anime, games, etc). plus, if you like strategy games you'll love it!
-the Professor Layton series!! it's a bunch of puzzles, has a great art style, has a lot of great characters & is super fun. I love it so
-Link Between Worlds was fun! a little weird from the series bc you can literally have all the tools right at the start & can, as I did, just wander into a high level temple without realizing it but fun nonetheless! very old-school feeling to it.
-you can also download games like LOZ: Link's Awakening, Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages - these are my faves
-you can also download oldschool Harvest Moon games, very fun
I'm not a big fan of Mario Kart 7? tbh in my opinion it's not worth the full price, so maybe try and find it used? Mario Kart DS is good, though, & kind of difficult
also, I'm not a big fan of Bravely Default either. I wouldn't recommend it.
I love video games & work in a vg store, so I don't mind sending you all the recs, ever, for anything. if you want to trade friendcodes, lmk! =w=
